Bearly a diary

AuguStory, the story of my blog

This is my entry for Robert’s AuguStory prompt.

I probably started on Blogger sometime in 2006 or before.

As a teenager, it completely blew my mind that I could, at no cost, just write my thoughts out, publish them online, and get feedback. This may seem trivial today, but before there was the Internet, getting one’s writing published and made accessible to a wide audience, was reserved for those lucky enough to have, well... a publisher willing to back them up.

For a teenager who no one really cared to listen to, blogging made me feel powerful. It gave me the hope that my thoughts might not simply die with me. Every reply, comment, or e-mail that I got, was proof that my existence meant something to someone, and that my opinions had value.

This may sound silly, but I still feel the same way two decades later.

Unfortunately I am not someone who sticks to one blog for very long. I can’t seem to give up blogging entirely either, so I hope that this will be the last blog that I start from scratch. Maybe it helps me to reframe my identity: I am a blogger, and this is my blog. There. I said it.

Even though I started and deleted dozens of blogs, this one hobby has been probably the most consistent of my life. I can’t think of a single year that I have not attempted to start and maintain a blog, be it on Blogger back then, then Wordpress, then Tumblr, even Neocities, other platforms that I can’t remember, Substack all throughout 2024, and since 2025, my most beloved blogging platform yet: Bear Blog.

I stepped away from blogging at the beginning of this year because I’ve been on a journey to minimize my dependence on the Internet, but I just had to come back. I need that space where I can process my thoughts by typing them out.

Hence why you’re reading this.

My blog is bearly a diary, but it’s mostly a diary. It’s equal parts a journal, as well as a stream of consciousness.

The photoblog is for the occasional experience from my life that I want people to be able to see with their own eyes. That’s the second reason why I crave blogging. As much as I avoid to talk about myself in person because I live by the motto be interested, not interesting, I still have this human desire to feel that others are interested in me, my story, my life, my thoughts, my feelings, etc. Self-centered? Perhaps. I have worked on getting rid of this need, but I have always failed. Maybe having one tiny blog where some people sometimes read about what I am up to, isn’t so bad, I hope...

Anyway, that’s the story of my blog.
