VII XXII MMXXVI

I did my morning reading on the indoor bike for the first time today. Spent about 45 minutes on it on the lowest gear, just happily pedaling. It worked like a charm. I also employed my dusty, lonely Apple Watch Series 3!

That was followed by an excellent writing session where I got pretty far with my sermon for August 1.

My wife returned from her vacation with her parents after lunch.

Shortly after 4 PM I then bought my digital copy of Atomic Habits on Apple Books, which I promptly began reading on the indoor bicycle. This time, however, I attempted some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). I would pedal for four minutes on the lowest gear, and then for one minute on the highest. I did six repetitions. With changing the timer and the gears, it added up to 36 minutes. Not bad.

The time flew by, as did the book. I read a tenth of it already. That’s insane. I’m astonished that this actually works. I read in the morning because after lunch, I’m usually too tired to focus, but the exercise actually improves my concentration, enabling me to read in the afternoon. I’m not only exercising, but I’m adding another time slot for reading during the day! Hurray!

The exercise was also excellent. I don’t know how much I can trust the measurement of the amount of calories burnt, though for the morning session my Fitness app indicates 189, and for the afternoon session 230. That’s a good start.

The most important part is my heart rate. I had an average of 109 beats per minute throughout the workout, 78 being my lowest, and 141 my highest. I didn’t quite reach an HIIT. I would have needed to reach 150 beats per minute or higher. That was still very solid aerobic interval training. It can only improve from here.
